Location: Newton, MA
Completed: Fall 2025
The project represents a prototype for a modern home which incorporates an accessory dwelling unit to increase the residential density on the site, while minimizing impacts to abutters. The house is carefully configured and scaled to minimize the impact of the ADU, while optimizing light and view in the main house. The plan of the main house is configured around an open central stair which defines the main entry, while providing substanial light at the core of the house and defining a small library and reading nook at the second floor level. The living spaces then radiate in every direction from this center point. Because the clients for the project are avid chefs, the first floor plan layout centers around a large open-plan kitchen which connects to indoor and outdoor dining spaces to facilitate conversation while cooking. The millwork in the first floor spaces utilizes a simple, modern layout. Details such as a hidden pantry and a built-in refrigerator are concealed behind a wall of wood paneling to ensure that the overall character of the space is simple and elegant.
